A pearl is a hard, glistening object produced within the soft tissue (specifically the mantle) of a living shelled mollusk. Composed of calcium carbonate in minute crystalline form deposited in concentric layers, pearls have been highly valued as gemstones and objects of beauty for many centuries. The most valuable pearls occur spontaneously in the wild but are extremely rare; cultured or farmed pearls now make up the majority of those sold.

The English word pearl comes from the French perle, originally from the Latin perna 'leg', after the ham- or mutton leg-shaped bivalve. The scientific name for the family of pearl-bearing oysters, Margaritiferidae, comes from the Old Persian word for pearl *margārīta-, which is the source of the English name Margaret. All shelled mollusks can produce some kind of pearl when an irritating microscopic object becomes trapped within its mantle folds, but the great majority are not valued as gemstones. Nacreous pearls, the best-known and most commercially significant, are primarily produced by two groups of molluskan bivalves: the pearl oyster (family Pteriidae) in saltwater, and freshwater mussels (families Unionidae and Margaritiferidae).

Cultured pearls are produced by transplanting a piece of mantle tissue from a donor shell into a recipient shell. Most freshwater cultured pearls sold today come from China. The commonly held belief that a grain of sand acts as the irritant is rarely the case; typical stimuli include organic material, parasites, or damage that displaces mantle tissue.
